For AIX 4.3.3, when configure is executed, the error message is :-

checking for cc... cc
checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C compiler cannot cr
eate executables

How do I rectify ?

Please try running configure as:
    env LDFLAGS=-blibpath:/usr/lib:/lib ./configure
and see if that helps.
